  • There are a variety of reasons why you would want to be able to keep an eye on your home. You may want to be able to see your baby as she sleeps in the nursery upstairs, or someone may have broken into your neighbor's home, prompting you to want to keep a better watch on your own home. Thanks to wireless IP surveillance equipment, you can keep an eye on any place in and around your home from any Internet-connected computer in the world.

    The Equipment

You must create a wireless Internet connection in your home in order to use wireless IP surveillance equipment. Some Internet providers give their customers a wireless router to help set up a wireless home network. If you have any questions about how to use your wireless router, contact your Internet Service Provider. If you do not have a wireless router, purchase one and follow the installation instructions. When you purchase your wireless IP surveillance camera, be sure to get one with a night vision feature so you can keep an eye on your house at night without having to leave the lights on, and also get a motion detection feature so you can record anything that moves in areas where there should not be any movement. Make sure your computer has at least a 500GB hard drive so you can record surveillance video, and a DVD burning drive so you can archive video and then erase it to make room for more.

    The Idea

Set up as many wireless IP surveillance cameras as you want. Put them in every room you would like to keep an eye on, and purchase cameras designed for outdoor use to monitor the outside of your home as well. When you install your cameras, be sure to put them high enough and at the right angle to open the largest viewing area. The installation guide will explain how to set the cameras at the proper angles. Make sure the field of view for your cameras is not blocked by a hanging decoration or a tree branch.

    Monitor Your Home

Once your cameras are in place and operating, you can open any Internet browser and type in the IP address for each camera to see the images they are picking up. The camera's IP address will be in the user's manual and it will be in a xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx format. Once you have the address, you can type it into any Internet-connected computer's browser in the world and be able to see exactly what your camera is seeing in real time.
