Migraines can occur from a combination of different factors or a series of the same factors. Migraines plague more than 29.5 million Americans, according to the National Headache Foundation. Females are more likely to get a migraine than males.
Food
Certain foods tend to cause migraines such as alcohol, chocolate, salty foods or foods containing aspartame or monosodium glutamate, according to Mayo Clinic. Fasting and skipping meals also trigger migraines.
Smoking
According to Mayo Clinic, 53 percent of migraine sufferers who gave up smoking and other migraine triggers became migraine free compared to 13 percent of nonsmokers who became migraine free after giving up foods that trigger migraines.
Scents
Some people are sensitive to scents such as perfume, secondhand smoke or chemical odors such as paint thinner or bleach. Any of these scents or odors can cause migraines.
Stress
Stress can cause a migraine usually after the stressful event has passed. Migraines related to stress tend to occur on the weekends following a frantic week at work or home.
Lighting
If you're sensitive to lights, then lighting can provoke a migraine. Bright, fluorescent, flickering lights or the glare from the sun can lead to a migraine.
