While a normal file cabinet is measured by height, a lateral file cabinet is measured by width. They are primarily used to save space over a traditional file cabinet.
Function
The function of a lateral file cabinet is to store files. Lateral file cabinets feature drawers you pull out, much like a dresser, but inside is room to place hanging folders.
Identification
To identify a lateral file cabinet, determine whether its width is greater than its height. If it is, then the file cabinet can be considered lateral.
Features
Most lateral file cabinets feature at least two wide drawers. Upon opening the drawers, there should be hinges where you can hang special folders meant to be hung in a file cabinet.
Benefits
Lateral file cabinets can sometimes be stacked on top of one another, giving you even more room for filing.
Potential
Lateral file cabinets have differing degrees of potential depending on the environment they're in. They're generally used to save space, but in some cramped spaces a vertical file cabinet may be the best solution.
