  • The PSAT is a practice test that high school students take to prepare them for the SAT. Colleges and universities look at SAT scores when making admission decisions. The Princeton Review estimates that around 3.4 million high school students take the PSAT each year.

    Time Frame

Some students take the PSAT as early as their sophomore year. Students are advised to take the PSAT no later than October of their junior year.

    Characteristics

In order to take the PSAT, students must register for the test at their high school and pay a fee. The PSAT lasts approximately two hours and 10 minutes.

    Topics

The PSAT is a multiple choice test that covers writing, critical reading and math. Unlike the SAT, however, the PSAT does not include essay or Algebra II questions.

    Scoring

While the SAT is scored on a 200 to 800 point range, the PSAT is scored on a 20 to 80 point range. Students receive both their individual score and their national percentile ranking.

    Benefits

In addition to serving as practice for the SAT, good PSAT test scores can help students qualify for National Merit Scholarships.
