  • Female baldness is not caused by the same problems that cause male baldness, which is primarily related to genetics. As a result, a woman may be surprised to find she is losing her hair. Female hair loss can be difficult to trace to an exact cause, but there are several potential reasons for the problem.

    Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a term used to describe the condition whereby a woman gets multiple cysts on her ovaries. Hair loss may be one of the few symptoms of the syndrome. If you have menstrual irregularity with your hair loss, you should speak with your doctor about this concern.

    Hair Pulling

Constant hair pulling is called trichotillomania. It is caused by psychological or emotional problems, and these must be treated in order to stop the hair pulling behavior and stop hair loss.

    Autoimmune Disorders

Several autoimmune disorders may cause hair loss including alopecia areata. Autoimmune disorders often do not have distinct causes, but they are at fault when the body is actually attacking its own cells. They are often treated with steroids or antibiotics to stop the circular-pattern hair loss they may cause.

    Scarring

Scars on the scalp can prevent hair growth. Scarring is not necessarily caused by traumatic damage. Frequent braiding or weaving of hair can often cause scarring in the scalp, preventing hair from growing in the future.

    Telogen Effluvium

This is a general term for too much "shedding" of hair. It can be caused by a number of problems, including environmental stress, nutrition or even drug use. If you notice an above average amount of hair is lost during washing or coming, especially if you are fair-haired, you may be suffering from telogen effluvium.
