The National Football League (NFL) was founded in Canton, Ohio, in 1920. When the idea of a Pro Football Hall of Fame was conceived some 40 years later, it seemed only fitting that the building be located in Canton. Local businessman William E. Umstattd made a formal bid to the NFL in January 1961, and it was approved a short time later.
