Melamine, when combined with formaldehyde, produces a very durable plastic which is used in many items including kitchen tools. It is inexpensive to make and kitchenware made with melamine has become very popular. It is available in several colors and attractive styles. It is readily available at many retail stores. According to the FDA there is not sufficient evidence to indicate that melamine used in kitchen utensils is harmful.

On the Other: Melamine is toxic

Melamine is toxic if ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. It can affect reproduction and is believed to cause bladder and kidney stones. It has been found that melamine can leach (leak) slowly, and many people refuse to use it in their kitchen. Melamine can remain in the kidneys for long periods of time. It can also be an irritant to skin or eyes when inhaled. Melamine is not microwave-safe because it absorbs radiation. It also does not contribute to a green environment since it cannot be melted (recycled).

    Bottom Line

Many people avoid using melamine plastic kitchen tools because of previous scares from milk and pet food made in China that contained melamine. The FDA has indicated that exposure to melamine in kitchen tools is not the same as ingesting melamine that was intentionally used in milk and pet food. Using melamine kitchen tools is perfectly safe when used as directed.
