    History

    According to the University of Maryland's Medical Center, India and China were among the first countries to cultivate and drink green tea. Archaeological evidence suggests humans have been drinking it for up to 500,000 years.

    Types

    Tea comes in a number of varieties, including black, green and oolong. Green tea is the least processed of the bunch, so it contains the highest concentration of antioxidants, also known as polyphenols.

    Benefits

    Polyphenols have been linked with a number of health benefits. Among these are reduced instance of heart disease, reduction in bad cholesterol and increased metabolic rate. More generally, polyphenols are thought to strengthen the immune system while weakening intruding disease cells.

    Theories/Speculation

    Recently, a number of studies have been performed to test the links between green tea and cancer. Research has shown green tea may decrease or prevent the effects of cancer. Studies remain incomplete, however, and scientists are not sure if green tea works the same on all different types of cancer.

    Use

    In order to enjoy the benefits of polyphenols in green tea, scientists suggest drinking at least one cup (eight ounces) of tea every day.
