Gardnerella vaginitis is a condition now known a bacterial vaginosis, or BV. There are several types of bacteria, including gardnerella, naturally present in the vagina. Sometimes excessive amounts of bacteria build up, causing vaginal discharge and odor,
Causes
It is not known what cases BV. It has been noted, however, that BV is most common after douching, after intercourse with a new partner, in women who smoke and in women with female sexual partners.
Diagnosis
A gynecologist can diagnose BV during a pelvic exam by viewing vaginal discharge under a microscope and performing a test that combines vaginal fluid and potassium hydroxide.
Asymptomatic BV
Women can experience BV without noticing any symptoms, Large amounts of vagina bacteria may be noted during a pelvic exam and left untreated if the woman is asymptomatic.
Treatment
BV is treated with oral antibiotics and antibiotic gels.
Pregnancy
BV is generally not considered dangerous but can cause complications in pregnant women, These complications include premature labor, infection of the amniotic fluid and uterine infection upon delivery.
