  • If you have pipes that are sticking through the drop ceiling in your basement, or anywhere in your house, there are a few things that you can do about them. Moving the pipes is a very expensive idea, and you will need to someone to do it because it will require re-doing most of the plumbing in that area, and in your home. So, it is usually better to try one of the other alternatives.

    Paint Them

Most people opt to paint the pipes that stick out from their drop ceiling. This is an easy fix because it can be done quickly. If the room is small and cramped, use a bright, lighter color for the pipes. Avoid white because it will show dirt. Choose light grey tan, or almond. First prime the pipes and then paint them. Most likely, you'll need to use a combination of spray paint and brush paint to completely cover the pipes. If the ceiling is high, or the room is wide and spacious, a deep, dark color like red or black will give the room a very industrial feel and can be an interesting look for any room of your home.

    Cover Them

Try to cover the pipes with something if you don't want to paint them. Remember that you might need access to the pipes, so you can't cover them permanently. If they stick out of your drop ceiling, try using some swag curtains that are attached to either side of your drop ceiling. A unique color of curtain can add brightness and flair to any room, and you'll be able to move the curtains if you need to have access to the pipes.

    Leave Them Alone

You can also leave the pipes alone. As long as they don't look rusty, they can add a certain ambiance to the area. Simply let them be, and then try to decorate using them instead of hiding them. If the pipes are black, use black metal furniture, which will match with the pipes and make the entire room look more industrial. If the pipes are a bright color, use that color or corresponding hues in the room. The pipes can look fine just as is, and you will always be sure to have access to them if you simply leave them alone.
