When they occur at the same time, nausea and heartburn can leave a bad taste in the mouth and interfere with appetite. Fortunately, most of the causes of nausea and heartburn are not medical emergencies and are preventable or treatable with behavioral changes and medical care.
Diet
Eating a diet rich in fried, greasy, spicy or caffeinated or alcoholic food or beverages may result in heartburn and nausea.
Digestive Disorders
Disorders of the digestive system, including gastroparesis, gastroesophagheal reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome and stomach ulcers might cause heartburn and nausea.
Lifestyle
Smoking, wearing tightly fitted clothes, and laying down after eating are lifestyle behaviors that cause nausea and heartburn.
Medical Disorders
Nausea and heartburn might result from chronic medical disorders including diabetes, pancreatitis, gallstones or kidney or liver failure.
Mental Conditions
Mental health conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression and eating disorders can cause nausea and heartburn and can worsen symptoms in people whose nausea and heartburn result from other causes.
Pregnancy
Hormonal changes, weight gain and changes in posture during pregnancy may cause women to develop heartburn and nausea.
