Military schools provide an environment where students focus intently on their studies and gain additional training in military skills, athletics and personal integrity. For that reason, students across the United States go to military school.
Types
Students go to two types of military schools: The first type has ties to a branch of the armed forces, such as the Marine Military Academy. These schools appeal to students seeking a military career. The second type are independent military schools, such as Fork Union Military Academy. These schools appeal to students who simply want a disciplined educational environment.
Schedule
Students go to military school for its schedule. The day-to-day routine of exercising, military drilling, attending class and studying varies little, which is ideal for students who thrive in highly structured environments.
Academics
Students go to military school for its academics. Military schools provide strong preparation for college, and graduates of the Marine Military Academy, for example, have gone on to top universities, such as Stanford, Duke and Princeton.
Geography
Students go to military school for its location. With military schools located from California to Maryland, students can often stay within a day's drive of home. On the other hand, the distance from home helps students avoid distractions.
Considerations
According to Family First Aid, an organization for troubled teens, military schools cost between $3,000 and $5,000 per month. Thus, the tuition for military schools is comparable to traditional boarding schools. However, traditional boarding schools don't emphasize athletics and self-command to the extent military schools do.
