  • There are many difficulties which you may encounter when sewing by hand or by machine; one of these is bunching materials. Some fabrics are much more prone to this problem than others, but with a little foresight it can be avoided.

    Tight Stitches

Sometimes the fabric bunches because your stitches are too tight. If you are sewing by hand, do not pull so hard on the thread. You are causing the fabric to gather. If you are using a machine, you need to change the tension on the pressure on the foot.

    Shifting Fabric

This can especially be a problem if you are using a slick fabric on a sewing machine. Try basting or pinning the edges before you begin to sew.

    Tension

It is important for you to maintain tension on both sides of the pressure foot when sewing by machine. Try holding on to the material both in front of and behind the pressure foot as you sew, making sure the material stays tight and flat.

    Warning/Danger

Bunching can make stitches difficult to pull. It is easy to create a run in the material, or a hole if you try to stretch the bunching out flat instead of removing the stitches. Never pull on the material to try to make it look right.

    Saving Material

If you have material that is bunched, you can still use it. Carefully use a seam ripper to remove the stitches. Then correct your technique and re-sew.
