  • A fungus is a germ that lives on the outside of the human body. Occasionally, this fungus can cause a fungal infection inside of the body. These types of infections are generally easy to treat because they generally stay on the skin.

    Identification

Fungus or fungi live on the skin. Fungus grows in warm and humid areas, making locker rooms, pools, public showers and shoes places where it commonly grows.

    Risk Factors

People who take antibiotics are at an increased risk of a fungal infection within the body, due to fact that antibiotics kill the good bacteria within the body. This allows a fungus such as yeast to grow. People, especially children who have an immune system disorder, may also be at an increased risk of fungal infections.

    Ringworm

A ringworm is a common fungus that often appears in children. A ringworm begins as a small bump that spreads into large, red rings. Over-the-counter creams are available to treat ringworms.

    Jock Itch

Jock itch is a fungus that appears in the groin area. It is an itchy rash that often has elevated edges. Wearing sports equipment and sweating excessively are two causes of this type of fungus.

    Candida

Candida, or a yeast overgrowth, is often present in people who have poor diets or take antibiotics frequently. Candida can cause itching in the groin area, as well as redness and swelling of the affected area.

    Prevention/Solution

Fungal infections may be avoided by wearing shoes, especially when in public showers or locker rooms. Also, washing and drying between the toes will help to eliminate fungal infections. Jock itch may be avoided by wearing cotton underwear and loose pants. Candida, or yeast infections, may be prevented by changing out of swimwear after swimming and wearing cotton underwear.
