Electromagnets are man-made magnets that are created through the use of electricity. This type of magnet is used in many modern applications and devices.
Electric Power
Electricity is produced through the use of generator. A generator uses an outside force (such as wind, water or steam) to rotate a shaft that turns electromagnets. Electromagnetic fields are produced, and they produce electricity.
Magnetic Trains
MagLev Trains, or magnetic levitation trains, use electromagnets to allow a train to move across a specially designed track without friction. MagLev Trains can go as fast as 300 mph, and they use electromagnets to lift the train off the track and to propel it forward.
Hard Drives
Computers use electromagnets as a part of the hard drive system. Electromagnets are used to write information onto disks. Without electromagnets, it would be impossible to store information on a computer.
Electromagnetic Therapy
Electromagnets are used in electric therapy to treat disease. Practitioners assert that electromagnetic fields can be used to disrupt ailments (such as cancer) that affect the body. Some electromagnetic devices disrupt the electrical and chemical communication between cells.
Appliances
Household appliances operate by taking in electrical current and using this power to create a magnetic field that is based on the electromagnet. Appliances use the magnetic field to carry out functions.
