  • Cleaning the outer bedding is something that everyone has to do at least a couple of times per year, because you should never pack away dirty blankets, quilts and comforters. But cleaning down comforters is a little different than washing the other things on our beds.

    Cleaning the Comforter

Read the manufacturer's instructions that came with your down comforter. When you first buy a new comforter, keep any instructions and put them in your laundry room or some other convenient place where you can refer to them when necessary. Hang your down comforter outside on a clothesline on a sunny day to freshen it up a little bit. Many times this is all it needs between real cleaning. A day that is breezy helps to remove dust and allergens that may have gotten into the fibers of your comforter. Halfway through the day, flip your down comforter so that the sun and the wind can do their work on the other side. Look for rips and tears before putting your comforter in a washing machine. Sew up any openings to prevent the down from falling out. Consider the size of your washing machine. Extra-capacity washers may accommodate the large comforter while others may not. Use the "Delicates" cycle on the washing machine with warm water. Do not use hot, as that may cause your comforter to shrink. Also use a very mild detergent, such as one specifically for down. Allow the washing machine to fill and work for a minute or two before you add the comforter to give the comforter less time in the agitation cycle. Put the down comforter in the dryer at the lowest heat setting. Put two or three tennis balls in the dryer with the comforter to help in the fluffing process. Remove the comforter from the dryer every 15 minutes to flip it around and check that it is drying evenly. Check that the comforter is completely dry. Even using a dryer at the Laundromat can take up to three hours, depending on the size of the comforter. For best results, clean your down comforter on a sunny day, start it off in the dryer and then put it outside to finish drying. Do not do this on a humid day, which might cause mildew to occur in the down of your comforter. Buy home dry-cleaning kits if you do not want to get your down comforter wet. This helps to freshen the comforter and also remove any stains. Follow the manufacturer's directions when using purchased dry-cleaning kits.
