  • There are only 12 possible notes played on a guitar, but endless amounts of original songs written for it. Knowing the notes and how to use them is important to mastering the instrument and taking playing to the next level.

    Open Strings

Open strings are played by plucking a guitar string without touching the fretboard. In standard tuning, the notes played on open strings are low E, A, D, G, B and high E.

    Drop D

Many heavy metal and rock bands utilize drop D tuning for a particularly deep sound and alternative playing style. In drop D tuning, the low E string is tuned down to a D.

    Chromatic Scale

The notes played on a guitar go up chromatically, one step at a time. For example, C is followed by C sharp, which is followed by D.

    Chords

Playing two or more notes at the same time is known as a chord. Since a guitar has six strings, the largest chords consist of six notes.

    Bending

Guitarists can alter the pitch of notes played on the guitar by bending the strings sideways on the fretboard. This technique is popular in soloing.
