Nausea is a symptom of an underlying disease or condition. In many cases, the cause of nausea is difficult to determine and diagnose.
Identification
Nausea is the feeling or sensation that the stomach needs to empty its contents. Nausea may occur with no other symptoms, or vomiting may follow. Vomiting is the stomach emptying its contents.
Infections
Certain types of infections may cause nausea. Infections may cause nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps and may also have fever present. The rotavirus, and the H. Pylori virus are two types of infections that may cause these symptoms.
Peptic Ulcer Disease
A peptic ulcer may cause nausea, due to the irritation of the lining of the stomach. An ulcer can also cause stomach pain, especially after eating a large meal.
Medication
Certain types of medications may cause nausea. These may include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprophen or aspirin. These may irritate the lining of the stomach, causing an upset stomach.
Considerations
Chronic nausea may be a sign of a serious condition. Consult your doctor if you experience persistent nausea, with no apparent cause.
