  • People often refer to gaffers tape and duct tape interchangeably. Although the two tapes can be used for many of the same purposes, they are in fact quite different.

    Names

Gaffers tape is also known as gaffer tape, gaffer's tape or gaff tape. Common brand names include Shurtape, Pro Gaffer, Pro Tapes and Scapa.

    Uses

Gaffers tape--named for the head lighting technician on a film crew--is used in the production of films, theater and photography for many purposes. For example, it can be used to hold scenery, props, lighting, microphones, wiring and other equipment. Because of its versatility, gaffers tape is often used in the hospitality industry as well for hotel facilities, conventions, weddings and other special events.

    Materials

Unlike duct tape, gaffers tape is a cloth tape with a special rubber adhesive that doesn't leave a sticky residue when the tape is removed. The cloth is coated with vinyl to make it water-resistant and durable; yet, unlike duct tape, it can easily be torn by hand.

    Appearance

With a matte finish that doesn't reflect light, gaffers tape is less noticeable than other types of tape. Black is gaffer tape's most common color, but it is available in dozens of colors.

    Cost

Gaffers tape tends to be relatively expensive, as much as three or four times the price of duct tape. However, many people find that its versatility and ease of use make it well worth the additional cost.
