<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: When To Plant Grape Roots
Grape root cuttings should be planted in the spring after the soil has thawed and is workable. If you've purchased your grape root cuttings, it's best to plant them immediately, but if that's not possible, wet the roots and packing material thoroughly and store the roots in plastic bag placed in a cool spot such as a basement or garage. Once ready to plant, prepare the roots by soaking them in water for several hours before planting.
On the Other: Planting Grapes From Cuttings
While generally sold as rooted cuttings, grapevines can also be cultivated from dormant grapevine wood. Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences recommends gathering pencil thick cuttings from dormant plants and storing them in a cool, damp place until ready to plant in the spring. Once planted, roots will begin to take hold in about a month.
Bottom Line
Grapes grown from either grape root cuttings or dormant vine cuttings do best when planted in the spring, or when the soil in your area has thawed and dried enough to be workable.
