Many women wear water bras not as a means of support, but as an accessory. When a specific outfit or occasion leaves women wanting to boost their bust size, a water bra can provide a quick solution. Through use of special pads, water bras provide a larger, realistic-looking bust line.
Significance
Water bras belong to a category of undergarments designed to alter the wearer's natural appearance. Water bras can make a woman's breasts appear larger by about a cup size.
Function
Water bras are padded, using cups fitted with sacs of water or synthetic mixtures of water and oils.
Advantages
Unlike other padded bras, which use air or fabric material, water bras have pads whose look and feel more closely approximates the natural contours of breast tissue.
History
Water bras became popular in the 1990s as a safer and cheaper alternative to breast augmentation surgery. Those surgeries had become controversial with media reports of botched surgeries and adverse health effects of defective implants.
Fun Fact
Water bras were used to comedic effect in the television show "Will and Grace," in which the character Grace wore one to a class reunion. It sprung a leak.
