  • Corosolic, or corosolic acid, is a substance derived from the leaves of the Lagerstroemia speciosa L. tree. There are many commercial formulations of corosolic acid designed primarily to control blood sugar levels.

    Chemistry

Corosolic acid is a pentacyclic triterpene that inhibits glycogen phosphorylases, the enzymes involved in sugar metabolism. It also inhibits protein kinase C activity. Corosolic acid is also called 2 alpha-hydroxy ursolic acid.

    Benefits

Corosolic acid has properties that help stem diabetes, kill cancer cells, reduce inflammation and blood pressure, and regulate fat metabolism.

    Formulations

Corosolic acid is available in tablet and capsule form. It is also available in creams, lotions and hair tonics. It is added to certain hypoglycemic foods as well.

    Interactions

Corosolic acid can produce additive effects when taken with diabetic medications. The dosage of your medication may need to be adjusted.

    Side Effects

Corosolic acid may produce skin rashes. If you are allergic to the plant from which corosolic acid is derived, avoid using it.
