Pride takes many forms. Pride in others or because of what God has done in a person's life is not considered sinful. However, most religions criticize other types of pride as being detrimental to the self, to others and to God.
God hates pride
Proverbs 8:13 states: " ... I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech."
Pride can keep us from a relationship with God
Pride makes people believe they do not need God. God counts prideful people as selfish and wicked.
Pride leads to disobedience to God
Psalms 10:4 says: "In his pride the wicked (man) does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God."
Pride harms the self
When we refuse God's direction, we cut ourselves off from His rewards. "Pride goes before destruction," according to Proverbs 16:18.
Pride produces selfishness
Pride leads to selfish acts--the opposite of Jesus' command in John 13:34: " ... As I have loved you, so you must love one another."
Pride harms others
Pride minimizes other people's blessings and revelations. Rejecting God's help hinders our spiritual growth, making us less useful to Him as a witness to others. English cleric and theological writer William Law commented, "Pride must die, or nothing of Heaven can live in you."
