With the growth of digital photography, the need for compact memory cards with large storage capacity is expanding at an exponential rate. The xD picture card is one option in the memory card market.
History
The xD picture card is a type of flash memory media for use in digital cameras. The original "eXtreme Digital" card was released in September 2002.
Sizes
When the product was initially released, the xD memory cards were only available in sizes up to 512MB. Beginning in 2005, cards utilizing multilevel cell architecture were launched. These cards had capacities up to 8GB.
Features
The xD memory card features a compact design while offering a large memory capacity. Additionally, it is compatible with a wide range of printers and PC equipment.
Considerations
The xD card is only compatible with select Olympus and Fujifilm cameras and is generally more expensive than other types of memory cards.
Fun Fact
At the miniscule size of 20mm by 25mm by 1.7mm and weighing only 2g, the xD memory card is the world's smallest digital-camera card.
