Neti pots are small pots that use salt and water to flush dust, pollen and other irritants out of the nasal passage. By using a neti pot, which can be made of clay, plastic, ceramic or metal, you are using a process called nasal irrigation that has many benefits for your health.
History
Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine and yoga have been using neti pots for centuries. The neti pot originated in India and have recently become fashionable in Europe and North America.
Function
When using a neti pot, you drain irritants such as pollen and dust out of your nasal passages. When these irritants accumulate, they can cause sinus and upper respiratory infections.
Significance
Tiny nasal hairs trap irritants from getting into the respiratory system. Using a neti pot can help clean these hairs and improve their function.
Benefits
The saline water used in neti pots also flushes out and kills bacteria and viruses that can cause the common cold, the flu or other infections.
Considerations
Before using a neti pot, make sure you read and understand the instructions. It is best to use distilled water because tap water can contain harmful impurities.
