A mini stroke, also known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA), is similar to a stroke because you experience symptoms like a slurred speech, sudden paralysis and loss of balance. However, a mini stroke last for a few minutes with no permanent damage. There are various causes of a TIA.
Identification
The cause of a mini stroke is a blood clot which briefly blocks the blood supply to your brain.
Atherosclerosis
The underlying cause of this blockage occurs from plaque buildup also called atherosclerosis. With atherosclerosis, the plaque blocks either an artery or one of its branches, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Significance
Plaque also decreases the blood flow reducing the oxygen and nutrients to your brain.
Risks
Risk factors which can cause a mini stroke are a family history of the condition, race, and being older that 55 years old.
Prevention/Solution
Other risk factors you can change to prevent a mini stroke are maintaining a healthy body weight, no smoking, limiting sodium and controlling diabetes.
