Male incontinence is the accidental release of urine in a man. Male incontinence is not a disease but rather an indication of a problem with a man's urinary tract. Male incontinence occurs more often in older men but is not just a normal part of the aging process.
Types
There are many types of incontinence. Among them are stress incontinence, urge incontinence, overflow incontinence, total incontinence and functional incontinence.
Considerations
Treatment depends on the type of incontinence the man is experiencing. Treatment also progresses in stages, presuming there is no other reason that could be corrected with surgery, like cancer.
Stages of Treatment
Stages of treatment for male incontinence include behavioral/lifestyle changes, exercise, use of incontinence products, medications and self-catherization.
Lifestyle Changes
Lifestyle changes to improve male incontinence can include limiting and eliminating caffeine and alcohol; identifying foods that irritate the bladder, such as citrus, chocolate or dairy; and quitting smoking.
Home Treatments
Home treatments include establishing a urinating schedule of going every three to four hours, regardless of need; practicing "double voiding" by urinating, then relaxing and urinating again; and, if necessary. keeping a urinal close to bed or chair.
