Cancer causes the overgrowth of cells in some parts of the body. There are many different treatment options for cancer. Chemotherapy is the use of medications to destroy cancer cells.
Identification
Many of the technologies used to deliver chemotherapy are very familiar to us from use in other types of medical treatments; chemo can be given in topical creams, pills or injections, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Targeting
In order to target a specific area of the body or tumor, the Mayo Clinic reports that chemotherapeutic medicines may be placed directly around a tumor, or wafers containing chemotherapeutic drugs may be placed near a tumor during surgery to release medication slowly over time.
Sub-Types
Another way to specifically target a tumor is to inject chemotherapeutic medication directly into it, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Catheterization
The most common form of chemotherapy is to give medications intravenously through a tube called a catheter, according to the American Cancer Society.
Considerations
The specific chemotherapeutic drugs and methods used for an individual vary based on the location of the cancer and the needs and desires of the patient, according to the American Cancer Society.
