Bipolar disorder is a chronic disease the goes into remission (the absence of a disease) and returns during times of stress. The exact cause of bipolar disorder has not been pinned down yet. Onset of Bipolar
The onset of bipolar disorder is usually sometimes during late adolescence or early adulthood with 21 being the average age for symptoms to show.
Inheritence
Bipolar has an inheritance component and tends to run in families. The disease is classified Bipolar I and Bipolar II with Bipolar I being more severe.
Symptoms
In bipolar I patients experience mania and depression while bipolar II sufferers go through hypomania and depression.
Mania and Depression
Mania is characterized by elevated energy, rapid speech, irritability, insomnia, increased distractibility and less need for food. Depression symptoms include crying, extreme sadness, excessive sleeping, loss of interest in friends and activities, pain and feelings of hopelessness.
