The House of Guerlain introduced Shalimar in Paris in 1925 and it quickly became the perfumer's most popular fragrance. With subtle scents of bergamot, iris and vanilla, Shalimar continues to captivate women today.
Inspiration
According to guerlain.com the 400-year-old love story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal in northern India inspired Jacques Guerlain to create Shalimar, the world's first oriental fragrance.
Name
Its name comes from Jahan's Garden of Shalimar, which he planted to make Mahal's life a "perpetual garden of delights," according to guerlain.com.
Bottle
Guerlain ordered a special crystal bottle from Baccarat to house his new, exotic scent, according to luxemag.org. Shalimar's bottle is instantly recognizable with its unique "shield" shape that has changed very little since 1925.
Advertising
The House of Guerlain traditionally used only brunette models in its advertising for Shalimar to further enhance its image as an exotic perfume.
Today
Guerlain has recently introduced derivatives of Shalimar to appeal to modern tastes, including Shalimar Eau Legere Parfumee (2003), Shalimar Light (2006) and Shalimar Black Mystery (2007).
