Cellulite and stretch marks cause the skin's appearance and texture to change. Dieting, poor nutrition and abnormal collagen formation increase risks of developing each condition. But major differences exist between cellulite and stretch marks.
Cellulite Appearance
Cellulite looks like cottage cheese on the hips, thighs and buttocks because collagen breaks down and no longer stretches skin tightly.
Cellulite Causes
Women can develop cellulite, but genetics increase the odds. MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia says metabolism, hormone changes and dehydration cause cellulite.
Treatments
Eating a diet filled with fruit, vegetables and fiber; remaining hydrated; and maintaining a healthy weight reduce cellulite development. Cosmetic surgeons use the Endermologie machine to reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Stretch Marks
Stretch marks appear as red stripes and bands on the breasts, hips, thighs, buttocks, stomach and under the arms. Old stretch marks turn white and glossy.
Causes Stretch Marks
Stretch marks occur for various reasons---obesity, rapid weight loss, pregnancy and puberty. MedlinePlus says diabetes, Cushing syndrome, medications and cortisone creams cause stretch marks.
Treatments
Maintain a healthy weight to avoid stretch marks. Creams, ointments and laser treatments can minimize stretch mark appearance.
