  • A network protocol is a a set of rules used to communicate between computers such as TCP/IP, UDP/IP or Link Layer protocols. When you have a protocol error, the communication has broken down. In some cases, the error is severe enough that the connection is dropped and must be re-established, or the message has to be retransmitted.
