Chronic back pain is a condition that affects millions of Americans. Though the condition is treatable, there are a multitude of causes so identifying the reason for the pain is the first step in recovery.
Function
Most often conservative home care is all that is needed to treat chronic back pain, according to the National Institutes of Health. This includes taking pain relievers, finding ways to reduce inflammation and exercising to strengthen the back.
Hot and Cold
The application of heat and cold to a sore back can help reduce pain and inflammation. The NIH recommends applying cold therapy on a new injury and hot therapy to older problems, several times a day for 20 minutes.
Medication
While over-the-counter pain relievers may help reduce pain, your doctor may prescribe something stronger if pain persists. If the chronic back pain is caused by a pinched nerve, your doctor may recommend an anticonvulsant or an antidepressant if the pain is interrupting sleep.
Alternative Treatment
Alternative treatment such as chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture and biofeedback can helpful in reducing chronic back pain and helping increase flexibility.
Surgery
Surgery is only required in the most severe chronic back pain. Surgeries can range from fusing the vertebrae to simply removing a piece of the troublesome disc.
