Skype does slow down a system. If you are finding that your system is slowing down dramatically, to the point that it freezes, other Internet pages fail to load in a reasonably timely manner, you may want to check to see if another large program is running in the background that you could shutdown, or if your computer is running updates when Skype is in use.

    On the Other: Skype Works

Assuming you have followed the system requirements recommendations listed at www.skype.com and you have a reasonably fast Internet connection, Skype should run on your computer with only a minimal amount of slowdown. Skype has 200 million users and was voted by Time Magazine in 2009 to be one of the 50 best sites on the Internet. Clearly, Skype works and is an effective tool for millions of people.

    Bottom Line

While Skype slows a computer down to some degree, most slow downs can be explained by common sense fixes such as using an old computer system, having an inadequate interconnection such as dial-up, or running programs that require a signification amount of CPU usage.
