  • One of the most intimidating experiences for anyone who's recently joined the armed forces is basic training, or boot camp. This grueling nine-week course shapes raw recruits into real soldiers.

    Boot Camp Locations

New recruits attend a training area for boot camp, relative to the Advanced Individual Training that recruits attend afterward. These training areas are found in locations around the United States, including Fort Knox in Louisville, Kentucky, and Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma.

    Weeks One and Two

During week one, recruits are given their first fitness test, taught to march, prepare barracks for inspection, maintain their M-16A rifles and practice drill and ceremony. During week two, recruits learn unarmed combat skills, first aid, map reading and navigation, and tackle the Victory Tower, a rappel from a 30-foot tower.

    Weeks Three and Four

During week three, recruits train with bayonets, practice basic rifle marksmanship, learn how to defend themselves in a chemical attack and continue to physically train. Week four continues marksmanship practice, teaches multiple target detection and brings in the second fitness test.

    Weeks Five through Seven

During week five, recruits qualify for marksman rankings. Week six brings another fitness test, training with various U.S. weapons, tactical movement techniques and a team defensive live-fire exercise. Week seven brings in the final fitness test and the challenging Confidence Course.

    Weeks Eight and Nine

Week eight recruits are run through the Warrior Field Training Exercise. Week nine is the culmination of boot camp, with a graduation ceremony for all recruits before they go on to Advanced Individual Training to learn their specialization.
