Video teleconferencing, visual collaboration or telepresence is a gradually thriving technology that provides the capability of groups of people to interact in real time, beyond walls, time zones and schedules.
Features
Video teleconferencing is a synergetic mesh of telecommunications technologies which allow two or more locations to interact via two-way video and audio transmissions.
Function
Teleconferencing video is being used in diverse arenas worldwide. On educational platforms, video teleconferencing delivers education from one city to the next, or one country to the next. A low-cost or no-cost alternative is Google voice and video in Gmail chat using a webcam and a computer's built-in microphone to enable video conferencing.
Benefits
Video teleconferencing reduces costs in many ways not usually noticed because the business and education sectors automatically factor in the traditional costs as a necessary expense. Today, instead of flying a trainer all over the country, one company conducts a video conference to each city.
Warning
The initial cost of delivery of video teleconferencing can be prohibitive for some companies, especially if video conference technology is used only occasionally. Some companies have overcome this hurdle by sharing the costs when they lease their installed video teleconferencing system to a company that does not have the available resources.
Potential
Video teleconferencing is migrating to a technology now called telepresence, where collaboration can take place between two groups, between an individual and a group, or just between two people.
