Knowing the proper techniques to use when a person suddenly stops breathing may save that person's life. A class in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, also known as CPR, will help prepare you for such an emergency.
Description
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, class instruction on CPR generally includes a lecture, demonstration and practice. Instruction also may vary depending on if CPR will be used on children or adults and if it will be used by the average person or by an emergency responder.
Breathing Techniques
Students are taught proper breathing techniques to revive a person. She will blow into the victim's mouth, two breaths each lasting one second, says Washington.edu's Learn CPR website.
Chest Compressions
Students then learn how to do chest compressions, which consist of pressing down on the middle of the chest 30 times. Students are taught to alternate breathing with compressions until the person starts to breathe on his own or help arrives.
Practice
Students practice on a life-sized plastic person until they have the techniques down.
Tip
Students learn that if a person isn't breathing, they should call 911 for help before beginning CPR.
