When bringing a fiance or spouse to the UK from anywhere other than the European Economic Area, a visa is required. The UK offers visas for fiances and visas for spouses with different qualifications for each.
Application
The spouse visa may only be applied for by married couples who are settling in the UK. Fiance visas are for couples who have not yet married and who intend to marry and settle within the UK.
Uses
The fiance visa is valid for multiple entries before the marriage. After this, it cannot be used to re-enter the UK. The spouse visa is good for multiple entries for the length of the visa.
Marriage
Fiance visas are only valid until the marriage takes place. A separate application for a spouse visa must then be lodged in order for the newlywed spouse to remain in the UK.
Validity
Spouse visas may be issued for a period of years, depending on how long the couple has been married. Fiance visas are valid for six months, during which the marriage must take place in the UK.
Work
Fiance visa holders are not eligible to work. Spouse visa holders have the right to work immediately upon entering the UK.
