  • A staple of the American diet, peanut butter is often seen as a healthy food and a good source of protein and monounsaturated fat. However, peanut butter does pose some hidden dangers.

    Additives

Some peanut butters contain unhealthy ingredients like hydrogenated oils and refined sugar. Opt for brands made from only peanuts or peanuts and salt.

    Allergies

People suffering from peanut allergies must obviously avoid peanut butter. Early indicators of an allergic reaction include a runny nose, a skin rash, or other seemingly mundane symptoms. These conditions can worsen quickly to include a dramatic drop in blood pressure, dizziness, constriction of the throat, trouble breathing and even death.

    Salmonella

Peanut butter is often susceptible to outbreaks of salmonella, which are harmful bacteria that cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Severe salmonella cases can prove fatal.

    Aflatoxin

Peanuts may contain a fungus that produces aflatoxin, which is a known carcinogen. The fungus grows on peanuts stored in hot, humid conditions. While peanut crops are tested for aflatoxin, the potential danger does exist.

    Spoilage

Due to its high fat content, peanut butter can turn rancid, which in turn can cause stomach upsets. Keep it in the refrigerator and do not expose it to light, heat or humidity.
