  • Celebrex is a prescription medication that is used to treat the pain caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in adults (See References 2). It is also for the treatment of more generalized, acute pain experienced by older adults. Like any prescription medication, there are some dangers associated with taking Celebrex.

    Gastrointestinal Dangers

The gastrointestinal dangers of this medication include upper abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and flatulence, and gastroesophageal reflux (See References 1). The majority of these side effects were reported by less than 10% of users.

    Cardiovascular Dangers

The most commonly reported cardiovascular side effect of Celebrex is increased blood pressure (See References 1). Increased blood pressure, while in and of itself isn't always very dangerous, it can lead to stroke or heart attack, both of which could be fatal.

    Nervous System Dangers

Headaches as a result of taking Celebrex have been reported by between 12% - 17% of users (See References 1). Other, more serious nervous system dangers such as vertigo or cerebral infarction have only been reported by less than 2% of Celebrex users.

    Dermatologic Dangers

Dermatologic dangers such as rashes, dermatitis, skin lesions, alopecia, increased sweating and dry skin have been reported in only a few users of Celebrex, less than 2% (See References 1). There was one case, though, where an 81 year old woman developed epidermal necrolysis, although this danger is very rare (See Reference 1).

    Hepatic Dangers

Around 4% - 13.4% of Celebrex users had abnormal liver function tests after taking Celebrex (See References 1). Less than 0.1% of users experienced more serious dangers such as hepatitis, jaundice, or liver failure (See Reference 1).
