  • Testicle pain is discomfort felt in or around one or both testicles. The pain can have a number of causes including testicular disorders or pain from elsewhere in the groin. Because the testicles are very sensitive, even a minor injury can cause pain.

    Common Causes

Common causes are injury, inflammation or infection. Another common cause is testicular torsion, a twisting of the testicles that can cut off blood supply and cause tissue death. Testicular torsion is most common between the ages of 10 and 20 and requires emergency medical treatment.

    Infections

Possible infections include epididymitis, which can be caused by the sexually transmitted disease (STD) chlamydia, and orchitis, which can be caused by bacteria or a virus like the mumps.

    Fluid

Fluid in the testicles can cause mild discomfort. These include enlarged veins in the scrotum known as varicocele, and a cyst containing dead sperm cells known as spermatocele.

    Hernia

Testicle pain may also be caused by a hernia. An inguinal hernia is a bulge in the groin or scrotum.

    Warning

According to the Mayo Clinic, seek immediate medical care if pain in the testicle is sudden and severe, or if pain is accompanied by blood in the urine, fever, chills and nausea.
