  • Bee propolis is considered by many to be one of nature's most beneficial creations. Its use is widespread, but like all substances with medicinal uses, should be carefully researched before trying.

    History

Propolis has been used for more than 2,000 years because of its strong antibiotic, antioxidant and antiviral properties. It is written about in ancient Arab, Greek and Egyptian medical journals.

    What is propolis extract?

The extract is produced when the propolis contained in the wax-like substance collected by honey bees is removed using a water-soluble organic solvent. This is usually ethanol (the alcohol found in beverages) but other solvents are also used.

    Uses and Benefits

Some benefits include enhancing the immune system, oral hygiene and fighting cavity-causing bacteria. Topically it has been used to enhance healing of wounds and treating skin infections.

    Side Effects

Asthma patients, pregnant women, those allergic to bee stings or bee pollen, and those allergic to certain types of tree saps should avoid use. Swelling, difficulty breathing, rashes and dizziness are some symptoms.

    Am I allergic?

If unsure about a reaction, begin with very low amounts for the first few days. If no symptoms occur, gradually increase the amount until reaching the recommended dosage. If symptoms occur at any time, discontinue use.
