Diarrhea is a common occurrence in dogs and puppies. While it is not usually a sign of a serious condition, some cases require veterinary attention due to a disease or an indigestible object lodged in the dog's intestines.
Symptoms
Diarrhea is a thin, watery form of a stool that often has a more pungent smell and lighter color than a typical dog stool.
Food
The main cause of diarrhea in dogs is something that they ate. Overly rich foods that are meant for humans can give dogs diarrhea. Since dogs have sensitive digestive systems, any change in their diet can trigger diarrhea.
Disease
Viruses, bacteria and parasites can all cause diarrhea. A veterinarian would have to take a fecal sample to determine if one of these is the problem so that the correct medication can be prescribed. Parasites tend to affect young puppies more often than adult dogs.
Stress
Any change in a dog's life, such as moving, a new addition to the family or a change in routine, can cause the dog to be stressed and have diarrhea that will likely correct itself with time.
Warning
Be sure to check with your veterinarian if your dog has diarrhea that does not go away within a few days. Since diarrhea can cause dehydration, make sure your dog has a clean source of water at all times.
