  • Migraine headaches cause severe pain that can endure for hours or days. Men don't get them as often as women and children, and they frequently mistake them for sinus headaches. Yet, men do suffer with migraines. Many males work hard, exercise hard and play hard. All of these things can cause alignment problems in the neck and back, and they can lead to migraines.

    Food

Migraines in some men are triggered by certain foods. Offenders include alcohol, especially beer and red wine. Other culprits are aged cheeses, chocolate, aspartame, caffeine, monosodium glutamate (MSG), and salty and processed foods. Fasting, dieting and skipping meals are also to blame for migraines in men.

    Effects

Stress can cause men to experience migraine headaches. Men who experience anger, frustration and anxiety may hold these feelings in; if they do, they may get migraines. Sleep disruptions can also trigger migraine headaches in males.

    Considerations

Extreme physical activity or exertion can also trigger migraine headaches in men. Changes in the weather (a drop in barometric pressure), some medicines and high blood pressure can bring on a male migraine headache.

    Identification

If a man can identify a trigger, he may be able to prevent a migraine. Sensitivity to bright lights or flashing lights, strong perfumes or aromas, smoke and loud noises can be causes for migraines. They can be avoided in many cases.

    Warning

A 2006 study presented at the American Heart Association meeting in Chicago--and published on the ABC New Medical Unit Website--unveiled research on 20,084 men. The findings state that men who suffer from migraines are at an increased risk for major cardiovascular disease.

    Prevention/Solution

Eating a healthy diet, getting plenty of sleep, reducing stress and anxiety, exercising and maintaining a happy outlook can prevent migraines in men, noted Dr. Alan Finkel, director of the University Headache Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
