The Fortune 500 list was introduced in 1955 by Fortune magazine. Carol Loomis, a researcher hired by Fortune in 1954, developed and pieced together the first Fortune 500 list. Loomis was not issued a byline for the work because, at the time, women were not allowed to write for financial publications.
