In 1820, Hans Christian Oersted (1777-1851) discovered that an electrified wire produced an magnetic field. However, the first practical electromagnet was built in 1824 by William Sturgeon (1783-1850). His device was a seven-ounce U-shaped iron bar coiled with a few feet of wire, and could support nine pounds of iron.
