  • In 1668, French Jesuit Jacques Marquette landed in Sault Ste. Marie amid the first European settlement in Michigan, which was already claimed by several Native American tribes. It wasn't until 1701 that Detroit--or as it was called then, Pontchartrain d'Etroit--was founded.
