Print servers help multiple computers communicate with one or more printers that are all on the same network. Print servers can either be located on traditional servers or on a desktop computer.
Location
Print servers can either be located on the main network server or can be self-contained. In some situations a single computer on the network can be used as the print server.
Purpose
Print servers work to coordinate print jobs as they are requested by various computers on the network. The print server will redirect print traffic if there is a problem with the primary network printer, saving time and frustration.
Restrictions
Print servers can restrict certain computers' access to certain printers on the network. For example, employees who do not need to print in color can be kept from using the color printers on the network.
Computers as Print Servers
Print server software is loaded onto a workstation computer. If the computer acting as a print server malfunctions, the software can be moved to another workstation on the network.
Used at Home
Generally, print servers used in a home network are desktop computers linked to a central printer. Anyone with access to the home network can access the printer from another computer.
