Capsular contracture is the most common and serious side effect resulting from breast augmentation surgery. It can happen with saline or silicone gel breast implants. The condition can have long term effects on the patient, and require surgery.
Cause
Capsular contracture occurs when breast tissue naturally forms around and on a breast implant making it feel as if the implant is being squeezed. It is the body's way of protecting the breast from a foreign object.
Who is Affected
Studies indicate that almost 20 percent of patients undergoing breast enhancement surgery are affected by capsular contracture. The side effect usually occurs as a result of infection after the procedure.
Prevention
There is no guarantee that capsular contracture will not occur. However, the risk can be reduced by wearing a compression bra, doing compression exercises and receiving massages after surgery.
Symptoms
Symptoms include painful breasts, very hard or firm breasts, breasts that are round like rubber balls or look different from each other.
Treatment
According to the breastenlargement.org website, the most effective treatment for capsular contracture is a capsulectomey. A capsulectomy will remove the hardened caspule around the breast and reduce future occurrences.
