The pancreas produces insulin, a hormone that helps the fat, liver and muscle cells take in glucose after meals. Insulin resistance occurs when these cells do not respond to insulin properly. They cause the pancreas to produce more insulin, creating excess glucose and insulin in the blood and increasing the risk of diabetes.
